PADI Women’s Dive Day 2017

In 2015 the Professional Association of Diving instructors started an event – PADI Women in Diving Day. They created this special day to celebrate and encourage women to enter the sport of scuba diving. The event has been growing every year internationally.

This year the Lobster Pot Dive Center decided to join in!

July is high season here in the Cayman Islands and we were fully booked with an Open Water Course, Advanced Open Water Course, fun divers and our special 3 tank trip event.  We took the Lobster Pot Boat ‘Larry’ around to the North for the first time ever. Our group of local divers enjoyed a quiet and relaxed full service day of diving.

A breakfast of coffee and warm croissants, cinnamon rolls and pan au chocolate was served after the first dive. A free swimming moray and 100ft visibility greeted us at Big Tunnels, a fabulous start to the day. Big Tunnels is a deep site with hosting ledges, swim thrus and valleys on the North West corner of Grand Cayman.

After breakfast we headed around to Eagle Ray Pass on the North side of theisland for another 100ft dive with 100ft visibility.  Voted the best dive of the week, this was a truly incredible dive. The group found a resting 8ft nurse shark under a ledge. We then headed out, via a sand chute, and off the famous Cayman Islands wall. The wall itself is a beautiful and detailed array of corals, ledges and abundant with life. Along the wall and from the big blue we were greeted by four eagle rays, southern stingray  and a friendly Hawksbill turtle that made his way leisurely through the middle of the group.

A delicious picnic lunch followed during our sunny surface interval, some snorkeling and some turtle spotting. Our 3rd dive was to Blue Peter Reef, a shallow site on the North of the island and home to a host of different species of crabs, lobster, macro life and our usual beautiful range of Caribbean reef fish. We completed our dive with some hilarious group photos, playing around in the shallows. Once out and drying off in the sunshine, despite watching an exciting storm brew in the North East of the island, the ride home was accompanied by strawberries and champagne.

A fabulous day all around!

Many thanks to all those who joined us and who supported us.  We are very happy to announce the day raised…. $300 USD for the Cayman Islands Crisis Center. Since 2003 The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre has provided a safe shelter and hope for a life free from violence to women and their children.  They vision is lofty – to close their doors forever because their services are no longer needed. Beyond the shelter they provide a 24-7 Crisis Helpline and a TalkLine for anyone in distress or just needing someone to talk to; they provide aftercare support to former shelter clients; counseling and aftercare support to shelter clients and other members of the public; they educate the community on what family violence is and what healthy relationships are; and they advocate for the often voiceless victims of violence.
